Dimitar Berbatov opines that Tottenham Hotspurs badly need a title now, having developed greatly over the years. The player played at White Hart Lane until his Deadline Day switch to Man United in 2008.

“Spurs are a better team that when I was there. But don’t forget we won the [League Cup in 2008] then. Now they have a new training ground, they are building a new stadium, have good players….the only thing missing is a cup,”the player said.

Tottenham have gone very close to lifting the title in the last two seasons. They gave Leicester City a fight in the 2015/16 season – even though they later lost out badly at the end, with Arsenal stealing the runners up slot – and fought hard against Chelsea last term, finishing as runners up.

‘Smaller’ titles like the FA Cup, the EFL Cup and others have eluded them. There have been numerous mentions of disillusionment if the team does not lift a title now. Their wage structure means there is nothing much holding the top players bar their commitment and passion to the club. The club has tried to fight off clubs that want their best players but this could change as the players mature and seek glory, and more money. Winning titles could bridge some gap.

Berbatov believes a lack of consistency is limiting them. “They have developed so much over the years, which speaks a great deal for the desire to be among the best clubs, and I think with some more consistency they will be there soon. They have all the tools to achieve this,” Berbatov added.
